Clothes & Things for your Heart Warrior: Get Ready for Heart Month

If you’re a heart mom like me, you likely struggle to resist buying up everything with hearts. So I wanted to share with you some of my favorites and latest finds to honor and support your heart warrior.

Heart Month is almost upon us and it’s time to call attention to and raise awareness for Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs). For all of February, we focus on heart disease. Congenital Heart Defects are a type of heart disease.

Celebrating Heart Month with your Heart Warrior

It’s your choice how much or how little you want to celebrate. For some CHDers and their families, Heart Month can bring up tough memories and they prefer to sit back. This is perfectly okay. For others, they want to celebrate in a bigger way, and this is okay too.

Some families strive to call a lot of attention to Heart Month to help increase public awareness of Congenital Heart Defects. In another family, a heart hero might be celebrating a Heartiversary or birthday during the month. If your friend has a child with CHD, consider these items for gifts to help the family join in CHD Month celebrations.

Why do we celebrate Heart Month?

My daughter was born with critical CHD and had to fight through her first year of life. February is an extra important month to me. We celebrate her, raise awareness for CHD, and try to get others to join the fight.

Do you know what CHD is? I didn’t know until my daughter was diagnosed. CHD awareness is relatively low among the general population considering how common it is.

A fun and easy way to call attention to Congenital Heart Disease is by donning all the heart, red, and CHD items you can. Hearts are fun, cute, and accessible for most, and they carry an extra special meaning for heart families.

While this can be fun, remember it’s not necessary to buy anything specific for Heart Month. You can always work with what you already have, make something, or borrow something.

People may not notice if you have a red shirt or a heart accessory or decoration or two. But if you make it a point to wear several red items back to back or have several personal things with hearts on them people may start to ask. Why the obsession with hearts? This can fuel great conversations about what is CHD and why they should care.

Luckily Valentine’s Day falls during Heart Month – not a coincidence, of course. This means you should easily find countless items decorated with hearts, probably any heart-themed thing you could ever want. Use this opportunity to your advantage. I always try to stock up with extra heart clothes for my heart warrior around this time of year.

Now if only we could get some of the Valentine’s Day merchandise profits for CHD. Could you imagine how much money could be raised for CHD research if every store with a “Valentine’s Day Shop” donated a portion of the proceeds? I’m looking at you Target, Gap, Carter’s, Old Navy, Primary, Hanna Andersson, Kohl’s, Little Sleepies, Macy’s, and countless others!
